I thought it might be better suited for the kinds of illustration work I like to do and so I decided to give it a try.\u00a0 These are my first attempts.<\/p>\n<p>First, I found a free-use photo of a gingko leaf and turned it into a bitmap line drawing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-89 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bluesun.curiousmindgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo-300x270.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo-300x270.png 300w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo-416x375.png 416w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo-768x691.png 768w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo-400x360.png 400w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo.png 963w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>OK.\u00a0 So that was fun and not too hard.\u00a0 What can I do with it?\u00a0 I played around with duplicating the image, changing the colors and made a few nice layouts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-93 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bluesun.curiousmindgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/color_ginkgos-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/color_ginkgos-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/color_ginkgos-416x418.png 416w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/color_ginkgos-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/color_ginkgos-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/color_ginkgos.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then I discovered the &#8220;tiling&#8221; tool.\u00a0 It helps create infinitely repeating patterns.\u00a0 There was a bit of a learning curve and many videos to watch before I figured it out.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-91 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bluesun.curiousmindgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo_tile-300x283.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo_tile-300x283.png 300w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo_tile-416x392.png 416w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo_tile-400x377.png 400w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ginkgo_tile.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is slightly more than one tile, but the beauty here is that I can clip out exactly one tile and &#8216;clone&#8217; it over and over and create an infinitely large background of ginkgo leaves at any scale (Inkscape creates vector art).<\/p>\n<p>After using GIMP for so long, the ability to resize anything on a whim makes me almost giddy.<\/p>\n<p>How far can I push it?\u00a0 The tiling ginkgo leaves are cool but not the hardest things to tile because they don&#8217;t have to match up precisely and there is empty space between them.\u00a0 Can I make a solid pattern?<\/p>\n<p>It was definitely much harder, but I finally got this using the &#8216;spiral&#8217; tool:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-92 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bluesun.curiousmindgarden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/spiral_tilepng-300x293.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/spiral_tilepng-300x293.png 300w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/spiral_tilepng-416x406.png 416w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/spiral_tilepng-400x390.png 400w, https:\/\/bluesuncraft.talkat.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/spiral_tilepng.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Again, I pulled slightly more than one tile, but yes!\u00a0 It works.\u00a0 This pattern can be repeated indefinitely in all directions.<\/p>\n<p>So there it is.\u00a0 I started the challenge late and I&#8217;ve only got 4 pieces posted out of 21 days, but I will catch up!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been using GIMP for some time now, mostly for work purposes, but I stumbled upon Inkscape.
